Subsoil acidity decreases yields by limiting deep root growth of Al-sensitive plants. The benefits of gypsum (CaSO42H2O) in promoting root growth in Oxisols have been studied in Brazil for more than 15 years. In contrast to agricultural limestone, the solubility of gypsum is high enough to allow considerable movement below the plow layer. Gypsum reduces detrimental effects of subsoil acidity on root growth in several ways. The presence of high levels of Ca eliminates nutritional deficiency of this element and reduces Al saturation. The sulfate anion exchanges with hydroxyl ions on surfaces of hydrous oxides and slightly raises the pH ("self-liming"). Sulfate forms a non-toxic complex with Al3+ and the remaining Al3+ is decreased by the higher ionic strength of the solution. Deeper root growth resulting from gypsum allows increased uptake of water from below the plow layer during drought periods and also improves nutrient uptake. These factors have resulted in yield increases in annual and perennial crops as high as 100%, with positive crop responses continuing at least 5 years after inital gypsum application. |
